Cattledog Dreams works hard
to include happy images of all
our dogs. This is easy to do
once the dog has been out of
the shelter for a few days, but
most of the dogs look like
Fergus here when they arrive.
What does it cost to make
one dog happy?
A minimum of $530
That assumes they arrive
healthy, are adopted within a month, and that no one other than the vet needs
to be paid for their time. It also assumes the vet will work at a significant
discount, and that there are no complications in the spay or neuter operation.

Don't believe it?
We didn't either until we put pen to paper. Here are the numbers:
Shelter Fee $ 0 to $80/dog Let's assume "0" for this calculation
Transportation $180/dog Includes the minimum number of trips
to and from the shelter and vet, plus a
conservative number of trips to the
dog park, foster homes and
prospective owners, charged at the
Federally approved reimbursement
rate for 2009 of 51cents/mile
Medical $200/dog For alteration, micro chipping, shots,
deworming, and a heartworm test.
Does not include commonly needed
procedures like teeth cleaning and
dewclaw removal. Either of these
procedures adds another $100/dog.
Collar & Leash $20/dog
Food, Treats $80/month/dog Food alone is $40/month/dog.
Chews and Toys
Equipment and $20/month/dog The amortized cost of dog crates,

one month.
